There horns range from almost completely black ones to speckled variations of black and whites to cream and dark horns, but all feature an Urnes dragon design (based on a find from Trollashogur, Iceland) and a top knotwork band which have been scored into the horn by hand. The band and dragon have been painted either using white or black acrylic paint so the design can stand out from the horn. These features make each horn unique.
The Urnes style dates from 1050 to the 12th century and gets its name from a stave church in Urnes, Norway. Carved wooden panels reveal sinuous animals interlacing and looping, with long eyes pointed forward. The style of the dragon design dates the original to the 11th Century, towards the end of the viking age.
