Oval brooches or fibulae, also called tortoise brooches, belonged to the Viking women's attire and were worn in pairs to fasten the shoulder straps of their apron or overdress.
This Viking fibula is modeled on an historical artefact. The original is on display at the British Museum in London, where it is classified and referred to as a type P51 brooch.
