Gnezdovo was a settlement located on the portage between the Kasplya and Dniepr rivers on the Varangian Way, the great trade route from Scandinavia through the Kievan Rus to the Byzantine Empire.
This is a Gnezdovo Mask pendant in the Mammen Style, made from sterling silver based on an original find of the treasure of Gnezdovo discovered in 1868. It is hand made using the ancient wax technique and is supplied on a black cord.
The other side of the mask has the Algiz rune. This rune belongs to the aettir associated with the god Heimdall, a son of Odin who is the guardian of the gods' stronghold, Asgard. Algiz is a sign of protection, representing the urge to protect others and is a defense against evil as well as a connection to the gods.
It comes Hallmarked and sterling silver chains are available to purchase separately. the ones that match can be seen in the gallery.
Whilst the belief is split between the mask representing Odin and Loki, due to several differences in the depiction of Odin in various archaeological sites, we believe it is more likely to be a representation of Loki.
