Thor's Hammer, also known as Mjölnir is the legendary and fearsome weapon of Thor the Norse god of thunder and lightening, and the protector of mankind. The hammer was made by the Dwarven brothers Eitri and Brokkr.
This is a weighty stainless steel Thor's Hammer pendant that hangs on a stainless steel chain and fastens with a clasp. It's a two sided pendant with both sides presenting a different design.
The back of the pendant has a simpler, yet detailed crisscross pattern inspired by scales and a trinity knot at the top. The trinity knot can be found in the same place on the opposite side. This side, the front of the pendant, is inspired by the Mammen axe; one of the best-known and best-decorated examples of the small Viking throwing axe.
It is a perfect example of the Viking's blend of art and war and was excavated from a famous 10th century barrow near Mammen in Denmark, the original is decorated with silver inlaid engraving in a typical Celtic manner.
This Thor's Hammer pendant is based on the side of the axe which is decorated with an animal figure - perhaps the rooster Gullinkambi (Old Norse “golden comb”) or the Phoenix. According to Norse mythology Gullinkambi sits on top of the tree Yggdrasil. Here it wakes the Viking warriors every morning and it will crow at the beginning of Ragnarok (the end of the world). The Phoenix is a Christian mythological animal and a symbol of re-birth.
