According to Norse mythology a water snake called Midgardsormr, or Jörmungandr (meaning “a gigantic beast”), is a great threat so Odin throws him into the ocean. But the serpent grows so large that it is able to surround the Earth and grasps its own tail. During Ragnarök the beast causes a deluge resulting in the submersion of the world. Afterward, the world resurfaces anew.
